Hard to compare those contracts since Bradford's is his 2nd contract and Newton is on his rookie contract. And wasn't Newton the 1st #1 pick under the rookie salary scale?

What is this in reference to?  The Rams overpaying for Bradford?

The fact that the Rams have the #2 pick in the draft. They have so much invested in Bradford that they really can not afford to take a quarterback.

That salary hit has to be killing them. Plus he is not an elite quarterback in my opinion.

You are incorrect sir. Bradford was the last  player to go #1 before the rookie cap went into effect. So this is still his first contract not his second.

I agree, they won't.  And they will try to move back.

If a QB went at #1, I would keep the keep the pick  and take Jadaveon Clowney at 1.2. He is a once in 10 years type of a player. He is going to be a beast in the NFL.

No this is his 2nd contract because they signed him to an extension at a big pay raise.

The St. Louis Rams agreed to a record contract with No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford on Friday night.

The deal includes a guaranteed $50 million for the former Oklahoma QB, the most guaranteed money included in a deal in NFL history.

In total, it's a six-year deal worth $76 million, with a maximum value of $86 million.

The deal will allow Bradford to compete in the Rams' first training camp workout on Saturday.

The Rams drafted Bradford with an expectation of him becoming the face of their franchise. He will also become a premier face of the NFL, with a contract that dwarfs those of even Super Bowl MVPs such as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

Bradford's $50 million guaranteed shatters the previous record for guaranteed money, set last year by Detroit's Matthew Stafford when his deal included $41.7 million guaranteed after he was selected first overall.

No this is his 2nd contract because they signed him to an extension at a big pay raise.

According to RotoWorld:

"7/30/2010: Signed a six-year, $78 million contract. The deal contains $50 million guaranteed, including his base salaries in years one through four, a $2.88 million first-year roster bonus, and a second-year "signing" bonus of $17.974 million. Another $8 million is available through incentives based on playoff, Super Bowl, and Pro Bowl appearances. 2014: $14.015 million, 2015: $12.985 million, 2016: Free Agent"

He was drafted in 2010.

St. Louis Rams fans continue to wait for Sam Bradford to play like a No. 1 overall pick. He hasn't played poorly through four seasons, but he often leaves observers wanting more.

It begs the question: When might the Rams' front office think about alternatives?

Thankfully, we have NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Media Columnist Mike Silver to ask these types of questions. Rapoport and Silver spent time with Rams coach Jeff Fisher, general manager Les Snead and Rams president Kevin Demoff in St. Louis this week.

"We have decided that Sam Bradford is our guy. If they came to us and wanted to do a contract extension right now, we'd do it in a minute," Demoff told Silver.

Bradford's deal doesn't run out until 2015. He's due $27 million over the next two seasons, which is a lot of money for a mid-level starter.

Rapoport and Silver reported on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access Kickoff" that Bradford is in no rush to work on an extension. Bradford knows how highly the Rams think of him, but he'd like to wait until he has the stats to back up the kind of contract he wants. (We'd argue that Bradford doesn't have the stats to back up the contract he has now.)

If the stats don't come this season (and they didn't in Thursday night's 35-11 loss to the 49ers, as Bradford completed just 19 of 41 passes for 202 yards), Rapoport reports that Bradford will play another season and reassess after 2014.

Bradford is not going anywhere, and there is no pressure to do a new contract soon. He's owed a lot of money in the next two years, and the Rams clearly are on board with paying it.

At some point, Bradford is going to have to play like a top-shelf starter in order to get paid like one. Bradford has time on his side.

Bubble of being assured of getting a franchise QB.  I guarantee someone will trade up and catch them by surprise and they will be so shocked that they pick a friggen center or something.

Yeah, that makes sense.  If all fails they get Sammy Watkins.

I'm not sure what gurus ever thought Brandon Weedon was going to be a franchise qb.

Probably the same guru who thought Jake Locker would be.

This years Brandon Weedon-->Blake Bortles

Buyer beware

Finally found someone else that isn't on the Bortles bandwagon. I hope he goes to Oakland, that would fit well.
